The Louisiana Racing Commission guides and controls all horse racing and betting in the state. It exists to protect the horses, the people watching, and the people placing bets to ensure the sport stays honest and safe.

By enforcing strong rules and maintaining open communication, the Commission helps keep racing a respected and trusted tradition a part of our state’s story for generations to come.

Our History

The Louisiana Racing Commission was created in 1940 when the Louisiana Legislature passed laws to regulate horse racing and pari-mutuel wagering in the state.

In those early years, the Commission focused on issuing licenses and overseeing racetracks where betting was permitted. Over time, its role grew to include detailed regulation of track operations, drug testing of horses and people, and public oversight of racing practices.

In 1968, Act 554 formally reorganized and strengthened the Commission under state law. Since then, LRC has evolved with the industry, modernizing its rules, improving transparency, and adopting new technologies to keep the sport safe, fair, and trusted.

From its beginnings through to today, the Commission’s work has helped ensure that horse racing in Louisiana remains not only a sport, but a respected tradition built on fairness and public confidence.
